From the Principal's Desk
Happy 2015! It’s going to be an AWESOME year. I am certain everyone had an enjoyable holiday season. This month, students in grades K-2 will participate in the DIBELS Assessment and M-Class Math Assessment and students in grades 2-8 will participate in the MOY NWEA MAP Assessment starting January 6th. Please emphasize the importance of these assessments to your children. The assessment results will be used to guide the instruction of the students.
I would like to congratulate our 30 new inductees into the Junior Beta Club. An Induction Ceremony was held in their honor on December 12th. Congratulations to all of these scholars and leaders.
Thank you for supporting the Holiday Shop. It was a huge success! The students enjoyed purchasing gifts for their families and friends. I would like to thank the PTO and other numerous parents for decorating the gym and for assisting our students with their gift purchases. Your support is appreciated.
Once again Ms. Davis and the Owen Choir put on an awesome concert on December 15th. The holiday assemblies on December 18th were also phenomenal. The choir’s concert and the assemblies always put us in the holiday spirit. I would like to thank Ms. Davis for her hard work and dedication in preparing our students for these performances and for allowing them to express their creativity through the performing arts.
I would like to invite you to be our special guests at our first BAND CONCERT on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. Also, please plan to join us at our monthly PAC/PTO/LSC Meetings on January 26th at 5:30, 6:00, and 6:30 p.m., respectively in the gym. Your presence and input are welcomed. In order to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday, school will not be in session on Monday, January 19th.
From the Assistant Principal's Desk
I wish a Happy New Year to each staff, student, parent, and family member of OSA. I pray it will be a prosperous and fulfilling 2015. Students, as we reflect on the many wonders 2014 has brought us, let’s continue to give thanks and push for continued excellence for 2015. We have several upcoming events to prepare for. Parents, we are asking full participation from each student and of course you. AS A TEAM, WE CAN REACH OUR DREAMS! We will be testing for the next couple of weeks (NWEA ASSESSMENTS IN GRADES 2nd through 8th and DIBELS BENCHMARK TESTING in grades K-2nd). We know that our students are well prepared in all subjects and are ready to take on the challenge of exceeding academically. If each student gives their very best, practice daily, completes all assignments, utilize time wisely, get plenty of rest, eat healthy, get plenty of exercise, and have fun, they will perform better than THE BEST OF THE BEST! Please make sure your child is completing all assigned homework and prepared for class each day.
The Primary Department celebrated with the students and parents during the annual HAPPY CAFÉ on December 19, 2014. We had a fabulous time practicing manners, etiquette, and chivalry. It was an afternoon of peace, joy, love, laughter, food, and dance as the students enjoyed being served lunch by their teachers, assistant principal, principal and other volunteers. The children also were generous as they exchanged gifts with one another. We were also grateful to Mrs. Bailey, Ms. Rafalin, Mrs. Dilworth, Mrs. Kirk, Mrs. Fenderson, and Mrs. Walker, for converting our gym into the beautiful and happy spirited HAPPY CAFÉ.
We thank Ms. Davis for an outstanding and enjoyable winter concert with our fabulous choir. The caroling was so beautiful. The school’s winter assembly was phenomenal. The children gave us an outstanding performance and the songs were beautiful. The play, “The Greatest Gift of All”, written by Ms. Davis was outstanding. It was a great way to set the tone for the holidays. Ms. Davis, you are truly THE BEST OF THE BEST!
Thank you to our outstanding PTO and their volunteers for your wonderful contributions and selflessness to the needs of our school. The Holiday Shop was fabulous with great buys for the family, raffles, and fun. The PTO also provided holiday shop for family and friends during the November’s Fall Festival. What a time we had as parents and family members supported each other’s businesses with great buys. Thank you for all of your hard work.
Lastly, we are very proud of our new BETA INDUCTEES and BETA members. The induction ceremony sponsored by Ms. M. Watson was great. We want our students to continue to work hard to maintain their honor roll status along with great character. You exhibit outstanding qualities!!!!
We cannot thank all of our Owen family (parents, staff, and students) for their many prayers, support, and contributions to the family of Brooklyn Cooper. It was truly a blessing to her and the family during this most difficult time. Brooklyn will complete her last day of radiation on Monday, January 12, 2015. Please keep her and her family in your continued prayers and thoughts.
