Please take the time to view the list of books available for the Accelerated Reader Program. You can make a trip to your neighborhood library to find the book you have chosen and then take the quiz in your classroom at school. There will be prizes given out at the end of the year for those students who accumulate the most points in this program. Happy Reading to All!

From the Principal's Desk
Dear Parents,
Thank you for participating
in Report Card Pick-Up Day on April 17th. Your
involvement in your child’s education is a critical element in
his/her educational success. You are valuable members of our team
and we could not be successful without your participation. I am
certain you are following your child’s teachers’ suggestions for
improvement during this final quarter of the 2012-2013 school year.
I would like to
congratulate our students who made the Honor Roll and who had
perfect attendance for the third quarter. These awesome students
were recognized for their achievement at an Ice Cream Social on
April 19th.
From the Assistant Principal's Desk
It was great to see each of
you during Report Card Pick-Up. I know you
received information regarding your child’s progress.
It is important students understand school is still in
session. We still have several weeks left of school.
All students should continue to strive to do their very best.
It is also very important for students to be present daily
and punctual. We still have students arriving to
school late every day. Tardiness interrupts the
learning process for your child along with poor attendance.
All students should arrive to school by 7:45a.m.
Students who receive 10 infractions or more per quarter will
receive after school detention.
As the weather gets warmer,
some students are getting a little restless. Please assist us by
encouraging good behavior. We have many exciting
projects and other activities planned for the remainder of the
school year. All assignments given to students
are very important. Please make sure your child
is completing all assignments given.
From the Counselor
Spring NWEA
Testing
The Chicago Public Schools
has taken an important step in helping students begin the
challenging process of academic achievement by arranging for them to
participate in NWEA Measures of Academic Progress testing.
NWEA provides MAP and MAP
for Primary Grades assessments aligned to the Common Core. Built on
the same equal-interval measurement scales as our existing state
aligned tests, these new measures bring continuity to your student
data as schools make the transition to the Common Core. With MAP and
MAP for Primary Grades, schools are able to benchmark their students
against the Common Core standards in the fall and gain valuable
insight about what they need to achieve under the new standards
throughout the school year.
The Owen Scholastic Academy
administration of the NWEA assessment will be as follows:
April 29 – June 7, 2013
Grades 2- 8
June 23-24, 2013 NWEA Makeup
Testing (If necessary)
Parents will receive a
Student Score Report after the assessment is completed.
Please review the results with your child.
We look forward to using NWEA data to help teachers, students and
parents track student progress throughout the school year.
Through our
fundraising efforts, we are truly making a difference in the lives
of others. We
raised the following amount:
March of Dimes - $173.00
Thank you to all students,
staff members, and parents for your participation.

Educational
Fee
Thank you to all the
Parents/Guardians who have already paid this fee for the 2012-2013
school year. If you have not done so, please send your Educational
Fee in an envelope marked with the
student’s name, current grade and room number on it for each child
in your family. Please provide this as a money order or cash.
Healthy Lunches
Please refrain from sending
Flamin Hot products and soda for your childs'/childrens' lunch.
Studies have shown these items can be
unhealthy for your child. Also, due to sanitary reasons, ALL food
brought for lunch MUST be consumed at lunch. Under NO circumstances
will food be allowed out of the lunchroom. All leftover food MUST BE
DISCARDED.
Computer Lab Needs Your Help!
Reminder: Please complete the CPS Consent Form and Release and list each child you have at Owen, then sign and return ASAP. The signed Acceptable Use Form is necessary for the following reasons:
- Allows each child to access the Internet via the CPS network, which is part of our technology curriculum at Owen
- Allows us to post pictures of our school functions on the website
Your cooperation in returning the forms is greatly appreciated. If you have any question, you may contact me (Mrs.
Morris) at school:
